COMEDIES BY WOMEN? YOU MUST BE JOKING!

THE 4TH ANNUAL BROAD HUMOR FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE ELECTRIC LODGE IN VENICE JUNE 12-14, 2009

The 4th Annual Broad Humor Film Festival, three days of funny films written and directed by women, takes place June 12-14, 2009 at the Electric Lodge in Venice. This year's program includes feature film screenings, shorts programs, panels on screenwriting, editing, and lighting design, and parties for participants. Says founder and executive director Susan diRende, "The films are full of heart, unlike most festivals where what you get is a lot of head."

The festival begins at 6 pm on Friday evening with refreshments and a live performance at 7 pm by the Quarterly Report featuring the comic writing of LA area performers.

This year's program includes two features that take an affectionate and funny look at teenagers. Going on 13 follows 4 girls in the Bay area as they negotiate the end of childhood. The mockumentary Your Name Here... tells and engaging story of two boys starting a band with a wacky posse of adult musicians. Coma Girl, about a determined underachiever, demonstrates it's not only the guy comics who can play a loveable shlub. And then there's the festival's late night creature feature, Attack of the Yeti Hand!

The festival also hosts panels and workshops. Cinematographer Cherri Stoute will conduct a panel on simple but effective ways to give a film a more polished look, whether working on a shoestring or the budget equivalent of a pair of Manolo Blahniks. Laura Shapiro (The First Time I Got Paid for It) talks with script consultant and blogger Julie Gray of Rouge Wave and The Script Department about writing, Hollywood, women and comedy. A panel of top women editors including Maysie Hoy (Meet the Browns), Melissa Kent (Four Christmases), Anita Brandt Burgoyne (Legally Blonde), and Michelle Clay (Life on a Leash) discuss comic timing and the fact that good editing can make the difference between a guffaw and a groan. Moderated by Mary Ann Skweres.

Legacy screenings this year include a production of an award winning script from the 2008 Broad Humor festival and a special treat that honors one of the founders of the very first Broad Humor production on stage over 10 years ago. Janice Kennedy's, The Dark, has been made into a movie starring Jodi Nelson and Julian Stone titled Man. Woman Blackbird. . These shorts will screen Sunday at 7pm prior to the awards at the closing ceremonies.
